Speculation grows on further IRA arms move
There is growing media speculation that the IRA is about to decommission more of its arsenal of weapons.
According to a report in a leading Irish newspaper the move is expected “sooner rather than later”. In addition, while there is no concrete information to confirm an IRA move is imminent, senior security sources are reportedly hinting at possibilities.
It is thought any decommissioning would take place within the context of the next controversial issue to hit the political forefront - amnesty for republican terrorists on the run.
As a bargaining chip, further decommissioning would make it easier for the British government to allow on the run terrorists to return to Northern Ireland without fear of being prosecuted for past IRA activity.
The first public endorsement that such a move was imminent came from the Chief Constable, Sir Ronnie Flanagan at a meeting of Northern Ireland's Policing Board last week.
He told members last week he had no doubt that an IRA arms move was being "considered" but added he had no information to suggest it had already happened.

Republican protestors briefly disrupted the public meeting between PSNI Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde and the Policing Board this afternoon. The Chief Constable was just about to deliver his assessment on the IMC report on IRA activity when around six people stood up and demanded to know where the information had come from.
