Cookstown firm fined for health and safety breaches
A Cookstown man has been fined £3000 at Cookstown Magistrates Court after being found guilty of a series of health and safety breaches stretching back over a period of five years.
Mr Desmond Loughran, of Loughadoo Aggregates, was prosecuted on March 11 for four breaches of health and safety legislation. The breaches surround the firm's failure to adequately guard dangerous machinery at a sand and gravel processing site.
After the ruling, Dr Bryan Monson, head of the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland's (HSENI) Quarrying Group, said: "An unguarded plant is a well-known hazard in the quarrying industry. HSENI will not tolerate employers exposing their employees to unacceptable risks at work."
He added: "The seriousness of the offences was reinforced by the magistrate who commented that if the defendant were to appear again on such charges she would substantially increase the level of fine imposed."
The HSENI are an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the department of enterprise, trade and investment to give advice in relation to health and safety at work.
The organisation provides information on safety in quarrying and their leaflets can be found at the information and advice centre at 83 Ladas Drive. The HSENI can also be contacted through their helpline on 0800 0320 121.
