Other NI News In Brief
Robbery Gang Hunted
The hunt is on for a gang who kidnapped two men in west Belfast to force a ransom payment. The victims, who were not physically harmed but were left very frightened by the ordeal, were held overnight on Thursday before one was ordered to remove money from a financial institution and then leave the cash at shops at Lenadoon. A black Vauxhall Astra car, believed to have been used by the gang, was later recovered. SDLP West Belfast Councillor Tim Attwood has condemned the kidnapping and said: "I urge anybody with information to pass it to the police without delay."
Hillary Is NI Bound
The US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is planning to visit Northern Ireland on 12 October. The planned trip was announced by the Northern Ireland Secretary Shaun Woodward during his speech to the Labour Party conference in Brighton yesterday.
Firework Alert
The NIO Security Minister Paul Goggins has issued a reminder of the legal requirement to obtain a fireworks licence to everyone who intends to sell, buy or use fireworks over the coming months. "The message is clear: if you intend to buy, sell or use fireworks you need a licence," he said. "As we approach the time of year when we see an increase in the use of fireworks, it is essential that everyone understands and complies with the legal requirements."
Grasp Export Opportunity: MLA
Businesses are being urged to take advantage of their export potential by participating in the forthcoming 'Slovakia: An Ideal Investment & Business Destination' event in Belfast's Waterfront Hall. East Belfast MLA and Stormont Junior Minister Robin Newton said: "Our local companies need to take advantage of the international business opportunities being presented to them, and realise their full potential to develop export-related experience and tap into new networks." The Slovokia trade meeting is on the 15th October and aims to provide an opportunity to meet with those who have already traded successfully and those representatives who understand the country's business and cultural traits.
Reservoir Scheme Planned
NI Water has begun a major programme of works to upgrade four key reservoirs in Co Antrim - from Ballymena to Ballymoney. The £3m project, funded under the Investment Strategy for Northern Ireland, was described by NI Water as an example of its "commitment to delivering a 21st Century infrastructure for the people of Northern Ireland". Project Manager, Gary McFadden said: "The Mid-Antrim Reservoirs Project involves the design and construction of four reinforced concrete service reservoirs at four separate locations. It will allow us to achieve a number of things, namely increasing storage, cutting down on maintenance costs and enhancing the overall security of supply."
'Chips' Power Developed
A Larne company, Biomass CHP, is developing a revolutionary renewable energy generator with global market potential, as part of a £600,000 investment supported by Invest Northern Ireland. The Co Antrim firm develops technologies that convert wood chippings into biogas, which is used to generate heat and electricity for industrial and civic use. The innovative modular unit being developed by Biomass CHP will produce no effluent waste, typically a common problem with existing wood to gas systems. In addition to R&D support from Invest NI, part financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Biomass CHP has also secured support from Clarendon Fund Managers and the company's board members.
Road Scheme Begins
Work has commenced on the £500,000 regeneration of Cookstown's Burn Road. Designs for the environmental improvement scheme were finalised prior to works beginning in the town centre last week. Dromore-based Graham Construction has been contracted to carry out the project, which has been funded by the Department of Social Development. Influenced by the Cookstown Urban Design Strategy, the scheme will focus on improving the area's built environment, and is due for completion by mid-January 2010.
