Hanna opens extension to East Antrim Institute
Employment Minister Carmel Hanna has reiterated her commitment to formulating a programme of education and training which will meet the skills requirements of today and the future.
Mrs Hanna made the speech during her visit to the Felden campus of the East Antrim Institute of Further and Higher Education, where she unveiled a plaque marking the official opening of an extension to the Institute’s Gas Training and Assessment Centre.
Congratulating all involved in this initiative, Mrs Hanna said: “This Centre was originally developed by the Training and Employment Agency, now an integral part of my Department, to support changes in energy use resulting from the introduction of natural gas to Northern Ireland.
“Having successfully bid for funding through my Department’s Centres of Excellence initiative, two further units have now been developed here – an industrial gas training area, and an industrial gas assessment – making this the only centre of its kind in Ireland.
“These new facilities will allow the Institute to support the re-training of existing craftsmen to fit non-domestic appliances.”
Mrs Hanna went on to acknowledge the close links the Institute has forged with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and many other organisations in the gas and plumbing industries.
Mrs Hanna added: “The need to continuously monitor the support we provide for the future development of the Northern Ireland economy, to meet the skills’ needs of today and the future, is central to my Department’s thinking."
The East Antrim Institute is one of the largest colleges in Northern Ireland, with over 1,000 full-time students and around 4,150 part-time students.
