RUC Veterans' Retraining Praised

The services provided by the Police Rehabilitation and Retraining Trust (PRRT) have helped thousands of officers adjust to life after their careers in the Royal Ulster Constabulary and the PSNI have come to an end.

According to the NIO Minister of State Paul Goggins: "The services provided by the PRRT have been crucial in helping thousands of officers make the transition to life after leaving the police service.

"For many that has been a difficult journey but the support of the PRRT has been essential in helping them and their families to make the adjustments," he said.

Addressing delegates at the Police Rehabilitation and Retraining Trust's 10th Anniversary Conference, Paul Goggins said that it is important that what it has achieved in the past decade should be recognised and not underestimated.

"Northern Ireland has made huge strides over recent years and it is important that we do not forget the needs of those who made sacrifices along the way.

"The Trust's expertise and proven record of success can be held up as an impressive example of how to manage change," he continued.

"I know that those who have been associated with the Trust value its work. It is important that the policing family continues to benefit from the support provided," he concluded.

The principle role of the Trust is to provide a range of support services for former and retiring members of the RUC (George Cross) and its successor, the PSNI.

These support services take the form of careers guidance and training and education support, psychological therapies, and physiotherapy.

The PRRT has enjoyed other high level support.

In May this year, Her Majesty The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh visited the centre and heard how it helps retired police officers make the transition back to civilian life.
