Countess Honours Military Nurses

A high profile VIP visitor is in NI today, with the Countess of Wessex, in her role as Colonel-in-Chief of the Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps attending a service held in St Anne's Cathedral in Belfast recognising the dedication and work of thousands of Military Nurses.

Over 500 serving and retired men and women and their families attended the interdenominational service.

The event included the dedication of a Memorial Window in recognition of the service of the corps in the preservation of life in peace and war took place.

Her Royal Highness was greeted by Dame Mary Peter, Lord-Lieutenant of the County Borough of Belfast and went on to meet Colonel (Retd) Rosie Kennedy who is Colonel Commandant, QARANC, and The Very Reverend Dr Houston McKelvey QVRM TD who conducted the service.

Earlier, the VIP undertook a function as President of Girlguiding UK and was guest of honour at a reception and lunch at Lorne House, Craigavad, to mark the Centenary year of Girlguiding UK in Northern Ireland.

The royal visitor was greeted by David Lindsay, The Lord Lieutenant of Co Down, who presented Will Haire, Permanent Secretary, Department of Education, Andree Best, Chief Commissioner, Girlguiding Ulster, and Lizzie Hogg, Deputy Chief Commissioner.

Inside the Northern Ireland Headquarters building HRH met members of the Girlguiding Ulster Executive Committee before joining guests for a private lunch.

Following lunch, HRH accepted an invitation to plant a Centenary Rosebush and later was Guest of Honour at a reception celebrating the organisations work in Northern Ireland.

This morning, Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex's first engagement of the day saw her meet residents of Mencap's supported living apartments in Bangor.

The Countess, Royal Patron of the charity, was visiting their new purpose built accommodation at Princetown Road for people with learning disabilities.

Mencap is the leading charity in its field and is recognised as the voice of learning disability.

In Northern Ireland the charity works directly with people with a learning disability along with their families and carers to fight discrimination and prejudice, and provide advice, information and support services.

The Countess was greeted by David Lindsay Lord-Lieutenant of Co Down and went on to meet another old friend of NI, Sir Richard Needham - a former high profile NIO Minister - who is also Patron, Mencap, Northern Ireland.

The royal visitor - who is married to The Queen's youngest son, Prince Edward - also met Maureen Piggot, Mencap Director Northern Ireland who accompanied Her Royal Highness during the engagement along with Sir Richard.

During a tour of recently refurbished accommodation which was built and is owned by Oaklee Housing Association and received funding support from the Department of Social Development, Her Royal Highness had the opportunity to meet residents in their homes with their family members.
