Belfast Shooting Condemned
The PSNI have revealed that a man has been injured in a shooting in west Belfast - the second such incident in the city this week.
The 28-year-old victim was shot in the stomach, hand and leg and has been taken to hospital for treatment. His condition has been described as stable.
The incident, in Lenadoon Avenue, was reported to police at about 8.20pm last night and the PSNI have appealed for anyone who witnessed the shooting or has any information about it to get in contact with them.
SDLP West Belfast MLA Alex Attwood has said those responsible for shooting a man in Lenadoon last night have no support in the community.
Mr Attwood said: "This is a worrying incident and we could easily be talking about a fatality. The gun should be taken fully out of the community, it has no place in any shape or form within society, and people need to guard against the continued use of firearms.
"I urge anybody with information about this incident to pass it to the police. Those responsible will continue to carry out these despicable crimes until they get the message loud and clear from the local community that we are against this type of behaviour. Nobody has the right to take this type of action against anybody in our society."
Sinn Féin MLA for West Belfast Paul Maskey has stated that the shooting will achieve nothing and has called on those responsible to deist from these actions.
"The shooting of a man in Lenadoon is wrong. It was carried out by groups attempting to make themselves relevant however they must learn from the past and see that so-called punishment shootings achieved very little.
"The danger is that, differing from other shootings, this man was shoot in the abdomen which could easily have killed him and we would be dealing with a murder in west Belfast.
"There are other ways to deal with the issues affecting us all, both with the community and with the PSNI.
"Those behind the shooting must desist from these actions and engage with the community in order to actively promote community safety partnerships and accountable policing so that we can bring an end to these incidents," he said.
Earlier this week a man was shot in a punishment-style shooting in north Belfast's Ardoyne.
