Facelift At Cultra Manor

Seven local firms have been invited to tender for a huge restoration project at one of Co Down's best known listed properties. NI Finance Minister, Sammy Wilson has revealed that each of the firms have successfully completed the first stage of the tendering process to restore and refurbish Cultra Manor. The £3m Cultra Manor restoration will be a major building project. The Minister said: "Central Procurement Directorate (CPD) within my department has assessed the returned Pre Qualification Questionnaires and has invited seven shortlisted firms to tender for the prestigious contract." Child Molester Jailed

A convicted paedophile who sexually abused three young girls, including one who has special needs, has been jailed for seven and a half years. Albert John McVeigh, 56, was also ordered to sign the police sex offenders register for the rest of his life.

Golf Hits 2016 Target

The SDLP Sports Spokesperson PJ Bradley has welcomed news that golf will be included at the 2016 Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee recently announced its decision to include golf as a new Olympic sport and it will appear in the 2016 games, to be held in Rio de Janeiro. "This is an exciting prospect for golf in Northern Ireland. We already have many great Irish sporting talents associated with this sport, including Northern Ireland's own home-grown talent Rory McElroy, who has definitely been making a name for himself across the international golfing scene. We also have Gareth Maybin, Grame McDowell, Darren Clarke and Michael Hoey to name a few others. I'm sure that list will be added to within the next few years," he enthused.

PMS Discussed

Stormont Finance Minister, Sammy Wilson, has met with a delegation from the Presbyterian Church to discuss the current position of the Presbyterian Mutual Society (PMS). During the meeting, the Minister updated the church delegation on the operation of the PMS working group and the extensive work underway to produce a report for Ministerial consideration. "This meeting provided me with the opportunity to advise the delegation on the state of deliberations within the PMS working group. I also listened to the views of the Presbyterian Church on this issue," he said, noting these are complex discussions on constructing a financial rescue of the PMS and a need to address a number of problems such as getting EU Commission State Aid clearance and ensuring that any rescue is compliant with UK government rules on control of financial institutions and public expenditure.

BOGOFs Slammed

SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey has backed calls from the University of Ulster at Magee to tackle cut-price drinks promotions in Londonderry aimed at the city's student population. Mr Ramsey, who is SDLP Spokesperson for Education and Learning, was speaking after University of Ulster Students' Union President Mick Gallagher hit out at the breaking of drink promotions protocol by many establishments in Derry. "I wholeheartedly agree with the University of Ulster authorities. We must tackle, head-on, those who are seeking to target vulnerable members of society, who may not realise the dangers they are putting their own health in," he said.

International Blind Golf Championships Set For Belfast
A surprising sport is coming to Northern Ireland - blind golfing. Belfast's Belvoir Park Golf Club will host the World Blind Golf Championships from 10 - 12 August. With one of the 'driving forces' behind the Championships being Comber's Jan Dinsdale - one of the top lady blind golfers in the world - the initiative is all the more appropriate.

Open Returns To NI
The Open golf competition is to return to Northern Ireland in 2019, it has been confirmed. The Royal Portrush Golf Club is to host the sport's oldest competiton for the first time since it was last hosted at the venue in 1951.

Politicians Help 'Kick Hate Into Touch'
An innovative campaign, the 'Unite Against Hate' sporting weekend has been launched. Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson and his Junior Minister Gerry Kelly (pictured) joined forces to support the campaign which highlights all forms of hate crime and challenges people here to unite to stop it.

Mervyn Storey Appointed Finance Minister
First Minister Arlene Foster has appointed Mervyn Storey as the new Finance Minister. He replaces Mrs Foster who previously held the post before she was announced as the new First Minister on Monday after Peter Robinson stepped down.

Arlene Foster To Appoint New Finance Minister
NI First Minister Arlene Foster is expected to appoint a new Finance Minister today, 12 January. The DUP Leader, who previously held the post, was announced as the First Minister on Monday after Peter Robinson stepped down. The Northern Ireland Assembly is to break up in March to allow an election campaign to start.
