'Pitiless' lip glue murderer jailed for at least 17 years
The County Antrim man who was found guilty of killing his girlfriend two years ago after super-glueing her lips together has been told that he should served at least 17 years in prison.
In his ruling at Ballymena Crown Court on Friday March 8, Mr Justice Weatherup recommended the Adrian William Hayes should serve the minimum sentence after he put his 21-year-old victim, Julie Tennant, through "pitiless humiliation".
During the nine-day trial at Coleraine Crown Court two weeks ago, the jury heard that Mr Hayes, 28, subjected Ms Tennant to a severe beating for 20 minutes, before sealing her lips together because she would not keep quiet. He told detectives that her cries were "doing his head in".
Mr Justice Weatherup said that Julie Tennant has died in a "hideous fashion" and that Hayes had "ended the life of an unfortunate and tragic young woman."
Adrian William Hayes, 28, originally from Broughshane, County Antrim, said that he had felt "confusion, panic and fear" after the murder. However, it was revealed that Hayes had wrapped the body in a sheet before burying the corpse in a shallow grave outside Broughshane.
Following the court's guilty verdict it was revealed that Hayes was a known criminal with a string of previous convictions for theft, burglary and assault. His last conviction before the murder verdict was for possession of an offensive weapon.
Hayes was arrested in England after visiting his uncle, who told police he had allegedly confessed to murdering a young woman and burying her remains.
