Belfast Pedestrian Zones 'Urgent'

A former Belfast mayor has said the pedestrianisation of the city centre is a matter of "urgency". Ulster Unionist Councillor Jim Rodgers said a preliminary ban on bus traffic was not enough. It is almost a year since 16-year-old Ciara Park died after being struck by a bus at a busy junction in the heart of the city's shopping district. Mr Rodgers said: "Ciara's death was unfortunately not the first serious incident in this area, yet we're still told it will be 2012 before all non-essential traffic is banned. "Piecemeal measures simply won't cut it - we need a big change before we face further deaths." He claimed if the decision rested with the private sector the slow phasing of the scheme would progress faster.

Drivers Licences 'In Post'

The Driver and Vehicle Agency has issued advice to customers in light of the postal dispute. A spokesman said: "Drivers who have applied for a renewal driving license may continue to drive if they hold a valid licence and their application has been received by the Agency. Drivers with a medical condition may also continue to drive unless they have been advised not to do so by their GP. However this does not apply to drivers who have had their driving licence refused, revoked or have been disqualified. "Customers can renew vehicle licences (car tax) at the Post Offices listed on the Agency website www.dvani.gov.uk or at their nearest Motor Tax Office, in Armagh, Ballymena, Belfast, Coleraine, Downpatrick, Enniskillen; Londonderry and Omagh. Customers may also book a driving test, MOT or practical test online at www.dvani.gov.uk or by telephone on 0845 247 2471. It is important to take a note of the appointment details at the time of booking as they may not receive an appointment letter in time for the test."
