Media skills scheme focuses on ethnic minorities
A new scheme that aims to tap the potential of individuals from ethnic minorities is to be launched throughout Scotland, Northern Ireland and the North of England by Skillset and the BBC this spring.
Supported by a grant from the Millennium Commission and funds from the National Lottery, the joint Skillset and BBC initiative will see 40 individuals given the opportunity to acquire a range of media skills that can be used in a project to benefit their local communities.
BBC Training and Development will provide the training for the scheme, which offers the choice of four two-week modules covering subjects such as professional journalism, radio journalism and production, digital video camera and film or multimedia production.
On completion of the initial training, the students will then receive a grant of £500 for their individual projects, which they have 12 months to complete. During that time they will attend two supplementary workshops where they will be offered practical help and advice, access to mentoring and training in fund-raising and marketing.
The course is the result of a census carried out by Skillset in 2001, which examined the size and make-up of the audio-visual industries in order to identify and address skill shortages. One of the key findings was that in London, although ethnic minorities make up nearly a quarter of the working population, they constitute only 8.7 per cent of all employees in the industry, and 7.7 per cent of all freelancers.
Bob Nelson, Head of Development and Training at the BBC and who is also Chair of Skillset, commented: "Reflecting the multiculturalism of modern Britain is as much about changing the faces behind the camera or microphone as those in front. Together with Skillset we are sure that the Millennium Award Scheme will do much to help develop media skills throughout all sections of the community."
