Belfast Lord Mayor launches Titanic festival

Belfast Lord Mayor, Councillor Jim Rodgers has officially launched 'Titanic – Made in Belfast', a celebration of the world's most famous ship built in Belfast.

Announcing details of the special commemoration, The Lord Mayor made his address in a specially themed room at Belfast's City Hall, which had many artefacts, paintings and schoolchildren's drawing of the famous liner.

Commenting on the eight day celebration which is to take place between March 30 and April 7, the Lord Mayor said: "Over the course of eight days 'Titanic – Made In Belfast' will commend and commemorate this city's central role in the genesis and launch of the legend of Titanic.

"For three years, Belfast and Titanic shared the same space and time, and those ties have been forged by memory and story into indissoluble. The time is right for us, the people of Belfast, to bring Titanic home."

The week of events begin on March 30 with Launch Day – a recreation of the atmosphere in Belfast on the day of Titanic's launch, on May 31 1911, while one of the centrepieces of the week will be the 'Titanic at Home' exhibition which focuses on the creation of the ship and the workers who put a piece of themselves into the famous liner.

Other speakers at the launch were Minister for Culture Arts and Leisure, Michael McGimpsey and Chairman of the Council's Tourism and Promotion of Belfast Sub-Committee, Tom Hartley.
