Assembly release west Belfast regeneration report
The Assembly Executive has launched a report detailing the options for reducing chronic unemployment and poverty in west Belfast.
The report by the West Belfast and Greater Shankill Economic Task Forces, which were set up last May, have detailed options for economic regeneration in the area. These measures include the emphasis on Targeting Social Need, Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy and the Springvale Education Village.
Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment Sir Reg Empey and Minister for Social Development Nigel Dodds formally launched the report at the site of the former Mackie’s factory in the west of the city.
Sir Reg Empey said: “This report reflects the views of the people of west Belfast and is about the issues and difficulties which affect them. The report is a testament to the communities in demonstrating their commitment and dedication in making west Belfast and the Greater Shankill a better place in which to live, work and do business.”
Mr Dodds said: “This is a significant document that captures the issues, concerns and ideas of the community, businesses, schools and agencies in both areas.”
Both ministers stressed that, in spite of the lack of opportunity in west Belfast, there is "great potential" in west Belfast.
The task forces are also assessing the economic potential of the area through identifying possible links between the Mackie’s site and other sites spanning the area from Twinbrook to Glenbank on the Upper Crumlin Road.
Sir Reg said that the key elements to transforming the economic fortunes of the area would be found in the quality of the people involved and he said that he hoped the economic task forces could unlock the potential of residents to contribute to future growth and prosperity: “This report provides my department, and the executive as a whole, with a great deal to reflect upon and I am determined to maintain the momentum and ensure that a coordinated government response to the economic task forces report is provided by the end of June.”
Mr Dodds concluded: “There are major challenges ahead in delivering improvements in areas which have deep-rooted and long-standing problems. Just as the problems are interwoven, so must the responses come from more than one department or agency"
