Release Of Desk Police 'Win-Win'
Plans by PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott to release 600 more desk officers for on-the-ground policing could be a "win-win for all".
Yesterday Mr Baggot said a review would be carried out on the work undertaken by hundreds of administration staff.
He said it was his view to release those tied up in paperwork duties.
District commanders will have to justify the purpose of every desk-bound officer by January.
The move has been welcomed by SDLP policing spokesperson Alex Attwood.
"These proposals can be good for policing and good for wider politics as long as there are no surprises in the proposals," he said.
Mr Attwood claimed former chief constable Hugh Orde failed to fully address the issue.
"I welcome that it may be done on Matt Baggott's watch. There are many ways and means to get hundreds of officers out on the ground, protecting communities and tackling crime."
He continued: "This can be done in good time and be a win for all in the community."
According to reports, Mr Baggott hopes to redeploy 600 officers into operational duties by June.

Baggott Is New Chief Constable
The man selected to lead Northern Ireland's police force has said he hopes to build on his predecessor's success. Matt Baggott was appointed by the NI Policing Board last night, and will replace outgoing Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde. Sir Hugh is standing down to preside over the Association of Chief Police Officers.

Four Arrested Following Disorder In South Belfast
Four men have been arrested following public disorder incidents in the university area of south Belfast on Thursday, November 14th. Police responded to a number of offences, including resisting and obstructing police, and assault on police. Three men, aged 18, 20, and 21, have been charged and are due to appear in court in December.
