Papal Nuncio Denies State 'Contempt'

The Papal Nuncio in Ireland has denied 'showing contempt' for the institutions of the Irish State by refusing to respond to requests for information from the Commission of Investigation into the Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin. Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza, the church's highest ranking representative in the Irish State, said in his first public comments since the publication of the Murphy Report last week, that revealed institutional secrecy and failings to prevent clerical abuses, that his actions "cannot be taken as [contempt] because it is not a contempt against the work of the commission, which we respect". Radiographers Praised

The NI Health Minister has congratulated a team of radiographers from the South Eastern Trust on winning a prestigious UK award. The Paediatric Special Interest Team from the Radiology Departments in the Ulster, Ards and Bangor Hospitals were the overall winners in the Society and College of Radiographers UK Team of the Year 2009. Michael McGimpsey said: "This is an excellent achievement for this team of radiographers who spent the last few years developing a child centred environment and in doing so have contributed to the improvement of imaging services for children. Children often find the hospital experience daunting but this team developed an excellent understanding of the needs of children and by doing that they deserve the credit that this prestigious award brings," he said.

Border Car Chase Vehicles Escape

Even flooded roads failed to halt a high-speed border car chase. It has just been revealed that the PSNI chased two cars which turned away from a Co Fermanagh checkpoint and drove off at speeds of over 130mph, narrowly avoiding road users and pedestrians. Police released details of the border car chase yesterday and said that it took place in the flood-hit Bellenaleck area on Thursday morning. Shortly before 11am, police said a black Honda Type R Civic and a Blue BMW turned away from a checkpoint at Derrylin Road. A car chase ensued as police pursued the two cars towards Derrylin at speeds of over 130mph. Both cars went through the village of Derrylin before crossing the border at Aghalane. Police have appealed for information to help identify the occupants of the two cars and anyone with information about the drivers or keepers of the cars is asked to contact police in Enniskillen.

Non-Graduate Surveying Introduced

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has launched a new qualification aimed at smashing the non-graduate 'glass ceiling' for professionals in the industry. The new entry-level qualification, which carries the letters AssocRICS, was unveiled in Northern Ireland on Monday by RICS Northern Ireland Director, Ben Collins, and RICS Northern Ireland Regional Training Adviser, Eion Lawless, when they met the Minister for Employment and Learning, Sir Reg Empey, at Parliament Buildings to discuss the new qualification. AssocRICS will offer those working in land, property and construction a progressive, non-graduate route to chartered status. It will deliver a professional qualification to a broader cross-section of individuals while ensuring that standards are advanced in the sector.

Toome Dualling Due Next Year

Planning for a new Toome dualling scheme in Antrim should be complete next year, the Northern Ireland Roads Minister has said. Providing an update on a £4.2m investment in the region, Conor Murphy said public information days explaining the proposed road works will be held within the next month. A public inquiry was held into the proposed scheme in November 2007. The project would link Randalstown to Toome and Toome to Castledawson. Public exhibitions to explain the revised junction proposals associated with the A6 Randalstown to Castledawson dual carriageway are to be held in the next few weeks in both Castledawson and Toome. Roads Service said it expects the planning of the revised junction improvements to be completed in late 2010.
