Reward offered for information on postman's murder

A £20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the prosecution of the murders of a young Catholic postman in County Antrim.

Daniel McColgan, 20, was shot dead by two gunmen as he arrived for work at a postal depot in the loyalist Rathcoole estate on the outskirts of north Belfast on 12 January.

Outlawed loyalist paramilitary organisation the Ulster Defence Association said it carried out the murder which was widely condemned by people across Northern Ireland.

However, to date no one has been charged in connection with the murder.

The PSNI have taken the unusual step of announcing details of the reward money, which has been provided by a number of groups.

Detective Superintendent Roy Suitters, the officer leading the hunt for the killers, said he felt the reward was a "worthwhile ploy". He added: "There is a good chance that this could take us somewhere."

The police are also anxious to talk to anyone with knowledge of the death of another man, Mr Stephen McCullough, whose body was found in Cavehill Country Park on 16 January.

A short time before he died, 39-year-old Mr McCullough had asked to speak to police about Daniel McColgan’s murder while he was in custody on another matter.

But Mr McCullough left Musgrave Street police station without talking to officers about the McColgan murder.
