Man Wounded In Lurgan Robbery Bid
A man was shot in the leg during an attempted robbery near Lurgan last night.
Two armed and masked men tried to force their way into the man's house on Rock Lane between Aghalee and Aghagallon just before 10pm on Tuesday.
During a struggle, they shot the man in the leg with a handgun and hit him on the arm with a sledge hammer. His injuries are not life threatening.
The police said this morning that the assailants escaped in a car, which is believed to have been stolen earlier in the evening in Dromore, County Down.
A girl in her late teens and a primary school aged girl who were in the house with the injured man, who is in his 50s, were not hurt.
The getaway car was a red Audi A4 which was reported stolen shortly after 5.40pm on Tuesday.
SDLP Upper Bann MLA Dolores Kelly condemned those responsible for the shooting.
"Those responsible for this savage attack in Aghagallon offer nothing for the future of people in the North.
"This vicious incident took place in a very quiet rural area and although the motive or reasons behind it remain unclear, this type of violence must be condemned by all right-thinking people.
"No one has the right to take the law into their own hands, whatever the reason, law and order should and can only be dealt with the PSNI," she said, appealing for anyone in the area who may have seen anything which may be related to this incident to contact the police immediately.
