'Overwhelming' Response To Bangor Plans

Almost 700 responses to regeneration plans for Bangor's Queen's Parade were received by the Department for Social Development.

Margaret Richie (pictured) welcomed the feedback, whilst publishing her department's report on the public's views.

Describing the exercise as "overwhelming", the Minister revealed over 2,715 leaflets were issued to exhibit visitors, with 2,642 viewing the plans on the DSD website.

"In total the department received 692 written responses highlighting and recommending a range of issues to consider," she said.

Issues raised regarding the development included the design of the development; parking and traffic; the multi use arts centre; leisure facilities; the future of the YMCA; impact on Bangor's heritage; and impact on the Methodist Church.

"I am acutely aware of the local community’s frustration that it has taken so long to develop the site," Ms Ritchie said.

The Minister suggested she wants to bring an end to the uncertainty, and its effect on people living and working close to the Queen’s Parade area.

"I will therefore carefully consider the results of the consultation exercise and make a decision within a matter of weeks on whether to support this proposal and appoint Karl Greenfarm Properties Limited as the department’s preferred developer," she added.
