Other NI News In Brief
Asbestos Dumping Slammed
An SDLP councillor, John Feehan, has condemned the dumping of five tonnes of asbestos waste at Red Bridge/Chancellors Road close to Newry. "The asbestos was dumped close to where work is going on to build the dual carriageway bypass. Whoever did this has no regard for people's safety," he said, noting that Newry and Mourne Council has had to call in specialist contractors in order to remove the asbestos and dispose of it safely. "I am appealing to anyone who can help (with information) to contact the police, the NI Environment Agency or myself or another councillor," he said.
McGuinness Backs Ethnic Group
The Stormont Deputy First Minister has launched Strabane Ethnic Community Association's (SECA) first annual newsletter, which details some of the achievements that SECA has enjoyed over the past few years. Martin McGuinness congratulated SECA on the excellent work they have been carrying out in the area in recent years and said: "This type of work is key to building the shared and better future that we all want to see. A future where equality and diversity are respected, promoted and cherished. While government has a leading role in promoting integration, we recognise and appreciate that much of the practical work in building relationships is undertaken by the groups on the ground, such as Strabane Ethnic Community Association.
Pollution Fine For NI Water
Northern Ireland Water has been fined £1,000 plus £61 court costs at Antrim Magistrates’ Court for making a polluting discharge to a waterway. The prosecution followed the discovery, on 24 December 2007, by a Water Quality Inspector, acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, that untreated sewage was discharging to the Sixmile Water from a storm water sewer in Antrim town centre.
Wilson Lauds Partnership
NI Finance Minister Sammy Wilson has highlighted the role partnerships with the private sector can play in delivering public services. Marking the completion of the roll-out of the Account NI project - a new financial processing centre for the Northern Ireland Civil Service - he welcomed the strong partnership between the BT led consortium and civil servants engaged in implementing the programme: "Account NI, one of a number of reform programmes, aims to improve the delivery of accounting services across the NICS. It has provided one streamlined service that cuts down the administrative workload for these suppliers," he said.
Praise From Education Minister
NI Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, has paid tribute to community-based programmes that can inspire and empower young people. Speaking at Forthspring Inter-Community Group, Belfast, where she was presenting certificates to young people who have completed youth projects, she said: "Community-based projects, such as Forthspring, have the potential to make major contributions to their communities through giving local people the power to make real changes that can affect many lives. The Young Leaders Programme will help to develop community leaders for tomorrow, while the Health and Well-Being Project gives others the opportunity to examine essential issues around health and self esteem and raise awareness of issues such as suicide. I am pleased that my department is able to provide support for Forthspring," she said.
