Former Primate Buried
Cardinal Daly - who died last week - is to be buried today with his own nephew Fr Brian Daly as concelebrate at the Mass, while the mourners will be led by other family members including his brother and sister, two sisters-in-law and nephews and nieces. The funeral of the former Catholic Primate of All-Ireland, is to be held in Armagh where his remains have been lying in state in St Patrick's Cathedral ahead of the Requiem Mass celebrated by his successor, Cardinal Sean Brady. The 92-year-old died on New Year's Eve, three days after being brought to Belfast City Hospital's coronary unit. Cardinal Brady will be Pope Benedict's representative at the service and will read a message of sympathy from him.
Road Tragedy Blights New Year
A woman has died following a road accident in Londonderry. Fifty-year-old Catherine Harkin was struck by a red Mitsubishi Colt on the Creggan Road at about 5.15pm on Monday. Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them on 0845 6008000.

Farm Funds Slammed
The SDLP Agriculture spokesperson Patsy McGlone has said Stormont Minister Michelle Gildernew needs to develop channels for emergency EU aid to farmers which are not dependent on the UK's Department of Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). "The EU has a scheme to help farmers through the current economic downturn with payments of up to £15,000 and farmers in France and elsewhere are taking advantage of it. However, I was disappointed to learn through a question to our Agriculture Minister that she is completely relying on DEFRA to develop an application," he said, noting that it is a poor advocate for farmers of any kind and for small farmers in particular. It has little clout even in London because farming is politically marginal there and its record for applying for EU aid, never mind negotiating it, is frankly disastrous. "The Minister needs to find ways of going around it, otherwise we are likely to see a global upturn before we see aid delivered to our hard-pressed farmers."
UCF Adventurer
Intrepid local adventurer, Noel Hanna, has set a new world record after successfully completing the final leg of his 'Seven Summits to Sea Level' challenge while raising funds for Northern Ireland's leading local cancer charity, the Ulster Cancer Foundation. Noel set off for Mount Vinson, Antarctica on 10th December for the last charity climb of his seven-leg journey. He reached the 4,897m summit of Mount Vinson on 23rd December before embarking on a 300km ski, over extreme terrain, to reach sea level at Hercules inlet. To date Noel and wife Lynne, who together summitted Everest in May 2009, have raised £130,000 for UCF to fund a major new support programme for cancer patients and their families in Northern Ireland.
Energy Saving
An innovative energy saving device invented by a local teacher has been brought to market with the support of Invest Northern Ireland. The standbyOFF is a remote control energy saving socket for use with TVs and audio devices in the home and is now being sold in Maplin stores across the UK and via another major UK retailer. The standbyOFF is a brand name owned by theoneswitch. Its unique features include ease of use and the fact that, unlike its infra-red competitors, it is not necessary to train the remote control and socket to communicate with each other, or to ensure a line of sight between the two. The device was developed with assistance from Invest NI, which also facilitated electrical engineering assistance from Queen's University for the inventor, Tony Mooney, a technology teacher. The company trades as theoneswitch, operates from premises in Ballymena and is run by businessman Malcolm Emery.
