Nick Joins 'Serious'
A former senior government press officer, Nick Carson - who has more than 25 years' consultancy experience in both the public and private sectors - has joined Moira-based Serious PR as Senior Consultant. Nick, (pictured) ran the Press Office in the Department of Agriculture for Northern Ireland for five years, providing communications advice and support to a total of three NIO Ministers. As a PR consultant in the private sector he has worked with several high profile clients, handling media relations and public affairs, preparing communications strategies and conducting internal communications audits. These clients included Douglas McIldoon, the immediate past Electricity Regulator in Northern Ireland, the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, Association of Education and Library Boards (NI) and BITOR Europe Ltd. In recent years he has worked within Northern Ireland's Criminal Justice System handling communications around sensitive issues associated with convicted sex offenders returning to live in the community. In his new role Nick will be responsible for internal operations and the provision of strategic counsel to Serious PR's growing list of clients.
Pensioner Beaten
A man, who is in his 80s, was left badly shaken in an attack at his home at the weekend. Police have appealed for information after the elderly victim he was assaulted during a robbery. Two men forced their way into the man's home in the Lower Garvaghy area of Craigavon shortly after 10pm on Saturday. They pushed him to the ground and started to kick him. The house was then ransacked, but nothing was taken.
PO Robbed
A post office in Coalisland has been robbed. The police said that two men entered the premises shortly before 9.30am on Saturday and forced a female member of staff to open the safe. Police said a substantial amount of money was taken before the robbers made off in a white-coloured van. The member of staff was unhurt, but left badly shaken by the ordeal. The men were described as being in there mid 30s and of slim build. One was 5ft 10ins and was wearing a dark blue suit, white shirt, blue tie and a beanie hat. The other was described as being 5ft 6ins and was wearing a white shirt with black epaulettes and a black tie. Anyone who has any information about the robbery is asked to contact police on 0845 6008000.
McDaid Witness Freed
A man has been granted bail after being charged with disorderly behaviour. However, the High Court judge who agreed to release Peter Neill, 41, banned him from associating publicly with more than two people at any time. Neill, of Hazelbank Road, Coleraine, was sentenced to four months imprisonment earlier this week. He was found guilty of causing disorder in the town on Boxing Day 2008. Neill is one of the main prosecution witnesses Kevin McDaid, a Catholic father-of-four, was killed by a loyalist mob near his home in Somerset Drive in the Heights area of the town in May 2009. Following Neill's initial conviction the district judge who jailed him refused a bail application pending his planned appeal. But Lord Justice Coghlin ruled that he could be allowed to live at his home address under strict conditions. The judge also imposed a night-time curfew and a ban on alcohol.
Hedge Alert
NI Environment Minister Edwin Poots today announced the launch of a public consultation on a draft High Hedges Bill. This Bill is designed to help people adversely affected by high hedges bordering their domestic property. The Minister explained how the legislation will operate: ”If after discussion with the hedge owner, a reasonable agreement can't be reached on the height of the hedge, this draft legislation provides a means whereby a complaint can be taken to a council. The council will decide on the issue and if appropriate issue a remedial notice requiring the hedge to be reduced to a reasonable height," he said. "A similar system has been operating in England and Wales for some time and I feel should work well in Northern Ireland. Of course I will be very keen to hear views on the draft legislation so that I can consider them and would encourage those who are interested to send responses to my Department." Public consultation In Northern Ireland on the draft High Hedges Bill will run until 1 March 2010.

Detectives in Newry are appealing for witnesses after a 24 year-old-man was shot in the leg in a paramilitary-style attack in Armagh. He was taken to hospital; though his injuries are not believed to be life threatening after he was attacked in the Culdee Street area of the city at about 10pm on Thursday. Four or five masked men entered a flat and dragged the man outside and shot him in the left knee with a rifle.

Bank to create 250 new jobs in NI
The Bank of Ireland Group (BOI) has today announced a multi-million pound investment in Northern Ireland that will create 149 jobs over the next five years. BOI plan to establish a specialist business in Belfast to service the rapidly growing offshore investment funds market, specifically hedge funds.

Cocaine found in Derry hedge
Cocaine with a street value of over £100,000 has been found in a hedgerow in County Derry. The discovery of the Class A drugs at Shanreagh Park in Limavady was the latest in the war against rising supply of cocaine in Northern Ireland, police have said. No arrests have been made during the operation which took place on Monday.

Five Arrested Over Journalist's Murder
Police investigating the murder of journalist Martin O'Hagan have arrested five people in counties Down and Armagh. The Sunday World reporter was gunned down by loyalist paramilitaries in 2001. The Lurgan man, 51, was walking home from a night out with his wife when the attack happened.
