Sacked Dell Workers To Get Assistance
On the anniversary of their forced redundancy last year after the withdrawal of computer giant Dell, workers are set to receive Government assistance.
Minister for Labour Affairs Dara Calleary today has outlined measures being put in place to assist the redundant workers from the defunct DELL computer manufacturing plant at Raheen, County Limerick.
Almost 2,000 redundancies were announced at the plant last year, marking the acceleration of the economic difficulties of the state.
The funding has been secured by the Government from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) and will include a package of personalised measures to retrain, upskill and offer further entrepreneurial and educational opportunities to up to 2,400 affected workers.
The EU Budgetary Authorities recently approved the Irish Government’s application for €22.8m, of which the EU will contribute €14.8m and the Government €8m.
Minister Calleary stated: "The monies to support those workers made redundant at DELL in Limerick and in ancillary enterprises has been successfully secured by the Government.
"Provision has been made within my Department's 2010 estimates for the national element of matching funding and we are expecting the transfer of EU monies to come through later this month.
"All monies have been ringfenced to ensure the maximum benefit derives to the redundant workers excluding a small element permitted for technical assistance in necessary management and control activities".
