Stomp Storms Belfast

Belfast Waterfront's production of Stomp - a unique combination of theatre, dance, comedy and percussion - opened last night. With not a word of dialogue for the entire length of the (almost) two hour, non-stop performance, the eight performers use boots, bins, brooms and everything, including the kitchen sink, (complete with water) to hammer out an explosively feel good rhythm, which had the near capacity audience enthralled from the opening entrance by a broom-pushing 'Wally' - who immediately drew the sympathy of every lady in the house. Devlin Trial Hears Of Cries

Murdered Thomas Devlin's school friend has told a court he heard cries of pain as the group was attacked and stabbed. Testifying at the trial of two Belfast men accused of the murder, Fintan Maguire said Thomas tried to climb a wall to get away from his attackers. Mr Maguire said he managed to escape into the grounds of a school but a man dragged Thomas down from the wall. Nigel James Brown, 26, and Gary Taylor, 23, deny murder and attempted murder. Thomas Devlin was just 15 years old when he stabbed to death near his north Belfast home in August 2005 as he was walking along the Somerton Road with two of his friends, Jonathan McKee and Fintan Maguire, who have both appeared as witnesses for the prosecution.

St George's Wins Accolade

Belfast's St George's Market has been named as one of the best in the UK after a survey published by The Guardian newspaper placed the market sixth in a national top ten. It named St Nicholas' Market in Bristol as the best in the country, followed by Catterick in north Yorkshire, Bury, Leicester, Manchester's Arndale and then St George's. The rest of the top ten is made up by Skipton, Borough, Birmingham's Bull Ring and Bury St Edmonds. This is the latest accolade to come St George's way from the national media, following on from its acclamation as the UK's most atmospheric market by The Observer.

Banking On Charity

Northern Bank has revealed that last year it raised over £160,000 for the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children (NICFC), the highest total since its charity partner programme began. Despite a challenging year for everyone, the charity inspired widespread support across the bank from both our customers, who gave generously, and staff who took part in fundraising events. The money will enable the charity to continue to provide vital support services to children who are diagnosed with cancer and their families. Northern Bank has committed to donating a total of £25,000 for all charity savings products opened during 2010 as well as pledging to raise more money through additional staff and branch activities.

Special Needs Education In Focus

SDLP Cllr Kate Lagan SDLP has expressed concern that "time is running out" for interested parties to comment on future special needs educational policy as outlined in the consultation document 'Every school a good school' as the consultation period ends on 31st January. "There's anxiety among parents and teachers of children with special educational needs in the light of this new policy. The unacceptable delay in expert diagnosis and the greater reliance on in-school intervention will cause even greater delays than we have at present and I believe not enough consideration has been given to the initial in-school phase of this three phase approach where class sizes are large and the onus is on a class teacher."

ATM Suspect held

A 44-year-old man has been detained in the Derrylin area of Co Fermanagh on suspicion of attempted theft and criminal damage. The charges relate to the attempted theft of an ATM from a service station on the M1 near Dungannon in June. He was arrested on Tuesday.

Belleek School 'Reprieved'

The withdrawal of a consultation to close St Mary's Brollagh Secondary School near Belleek has been praised. SDLP Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Tommy Gallagher said it is a commonsense decision and highlights the role and benefits small schools play in their local rural community cannot be quantified by enrolment numbers. "The plan to close St Mary's just because it was the smallest school was an indefensible plan. At least now it will be treated in the same way as all post-primaries in Fermanagh. The decisions regarding small schools must not be taken only on a crude financial basis. The benefits small schools offer their local communities far outweigh any other so-called disadvantages," he said.

Poorer Kids Turn To Violence

Disadvantaged children brought up in poverty in NI risk being drawn into continuing political violence, according to University of Ulster social policy researcher Goretti Horgan. Addressing a social policy research seminar in Belfast yesterday, Ms Horgan, who is a lecturer in Social Policy and ARK Associate said that as a society emerging from conflict, the views and experiences of young people living in the most disadvantaged parts of Northern Ireland should be cause for alarm.
