Eating More Makes You Fat
There's little surprise in a new study from the University of Ulster, which has concluded that eating large food portions can significantly increase weight even during short periods. In what must count as the most obvious (and unnecessary?) piece of data to be uncovered, a team of nutritionist researchers, led by Professor Barbara Livingstone and Dr Mary Kelly from Ulster's Biomedical Sciences Research Institute, has carried out the first study in controlled conditions, of how eating different portion sizes impacts on energy intake and body weight. In just four days men eating three large meals a day piled on an extra kilo, while women weighed an extra half a kilo on the scales. The study was carried out at a residential facility in the University's Coleraine campus where 43 adults - 21 men and 22 women - a mix of normal weight and overweight volunteers, lived for four consecutive days.
Marie Cure Seeks Help
An array of well known faces have come together to recruit some 650 volunteer collectors across NI and beyond to help Marie Curie Cancer Care's Great Daffodil Appeal 2010 and raise £100,000 for the charity to service the local community. Stephen Fry, Tony Blackburn, Lynda Bellingham, Jon Culshaw, Alison Steadman, and Sir Ranulph Fiennes are among the stars who feature in a short video calling on people of Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK to volunteer to raise funds to provide nursing care for terminally ill people in their own homes. The video, which can be viewed online at www.mariecurie.org.uk/daffodil/ has been made by Marie Curie Cancer Care to help recruit a total of 20,000 volunteer collectors across the UK for its 2010 Great Daffodil Appeal.
Housing Executive Funded
Northern Ireland Housing Minister Margaret Ritchie has announced a further £6million for Housing Executive maintenance programmes. "Six million pounds will be spent on kitchen replacements and new heating systems in houses which desperately need to be modernised. This means that thousands of people will now have their homes improved. Just as importantly, this further £6million will secure jobs for the Housing Executive's Egan contractors who will have a large body of new work to carry out," she said.

Plan To Improve Water Environment
A six-year plan to improve the quality of water in Northern Ireland's rivers has been launched by Environment Minister Edwin Poots. The implementation of the 'River Basin Management Plans' takes place from 2010 to 2015. "We rely on our water environment not only for drinking water but also recreation, industry, tourism and agriculture. As our waters are home to over 50% of our plants, animals and habitats, the quality is vitally important," he said, noting that the Northern Ireland Environment Agency Water Management Unit will actively work with a range of stakeholders in each river basin area across Northern Ireland to develop focused plans to improve the quality of water.
