De-Icing Derry Airport Cost £70K

The cost of the recent cold snap across Ireland continues be counted, after the City of Derry Airport revealed it has spent £70,000 to keep the runway open during the icy spell.

According to a spokesperson for the airport, the money was spent on snow clearing operations – including de-icing and costs incurred due to enforced periods of staff overtime.

"The cold spell was unusual in its severity and duration," said the spokesperson.

"It was essential to keep the runway and taxiway operational and free of ice and snow.

"This was in an effort to minimise disruption to passengers."
