Gerry McElwee, Head of Cancer Prevention, said: "The Government has achieved a great deal by making public places smoke-free. However, smoking is still the single, largest cause of preventable death and disease in this country and much more needs to be done to protect children from being trapped into a lifelong addiction to nicotine and to help existing smokers quit. This strategy outlines ambitious, yet realistic, goals to dramatically reduce smoking rates among adults and provide a smoke-free future for our children," he said. See: Smokers 'Halved' By 2020
