Four Beat Woman With Bats
A house has been ransacked and windows broken after a 29-year-old woman was seriously injured by a masked gang at a house in Newtownards. It happened at about 10pm last night and saw four men wearing balaclavas forcing their way into the house in the Blenheim drive area and attacking the woman with baseball bats. Although the woman's injuries are serious they are not life-threatening. A man who was also in the house at the time was not injured.
Waste Offences Sentence Suspended
A Co Tyrone man has been given a suspended prison sentence at Enniskillen Crown Court after pleading guilty to illegal waste offences. Patrick Sherry from, Aughnacloy, Co Tyrone, was given a three months prison sentence, suspended for one year, for two offences under the Waste and Contaminated Land Order (Northern Ireland) 1997. On 19 December 2005, officers from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (formerly the Environment and Heritage Service) investigating complaints about illegally deposited waste in the Carnteel area, discovered an oily leachate escaping into Craig's Bog.
Electoral Probe Ends
The Electoral Commission has completed its review of donations made to the DUP by its leader Peter Robinson. It happned after an interview with the News Letter last June, when he said that he gave his Assembly salary to the party. The Commission opened the review because donations over £5,000 to a political party have to be declared, but as an MP, Mr Robinson's MLA salary is reduced to £15,000 but it is understood the commission has no record of any donation over the £5,000 limit.
Ardmore Gets More
In a first for a Northern Ireland advertising agency, Holywood-based Ardmore has secured a major programme sponsorship on mainland GB for a heritage UK FMCG brand, Golden Wonder. The deal with Scottish Television takes ownership of 'STV Sports News' in their flagship primetime news programme Scotland Today. Filming and extensive CGI work is now completing with specialist camera crew flown in for a production made exclusively here in Northern Ireland. The concepts align sports fanaticism with 'Full on flavour' in the Scottish market where Golden Wonder have strong distribution.
Prisioners Back Blind
Maghaberry Prison has presented a cheque for £5,000 to Guide Dogs NI to pay for the first puppy to be trained in Northern Ireland. The money was raised by the sale of hanging baskets, Christmas wreaths and floral decorations created in the prison garden. Guide Dog NI fundraising co-ordinator Kathy Peart, who accepted the cheque from Maghaberry Governor Alan Craig, thanked staff and inmates for their hard work: "Five thousand pounds is an absolutely fantastic amount of money. It will pay for us to breed and train a puppy to become a guide dog. Someone in Northern Ireland will benefit from the money you have raised."
Slaughterhouse Fund Deadline
Operators of sheep markets, abattoirs, export assembly centres, and slaughter collection centres have been reminded that the closing date for funding applications is Monday 15 February. Minister Michelle Gildernew said the funding was to help these operators read sheep EID tags and complete movement documents on behalf of keepers. This week she underlined that all operators should have received their application pack in the post by now and should contact Veterinary Service Implementation Support Unit without delay if not, on tel: 028 9052 4711.
Brothel Pair Jailed
A couple have been jailed for running a "lucrative" prostitute ring in Northern Ireland and in Ireland from Pembrokeshire, Wales. Young women arriving from south America and Africa believed they would be given work as hairdressers. Thomas Carroll, 48, was jailed for seven years and his wife Shamiela Clark, 32, to three-and-half-years at Cardiff Crown Court. They admitted prostitution and money laundering offences. Carroll's daughter Toma, 26, got two years for laundering and running the business from an old vicarage in the village of Castlemartin.

53-Year-Old Dies In Custody At Maghaberry Prison
A 53-year-old has reportedly died in custody at Maghaberry Prison, the Northern Ireland Prison Service has announced. The Department of Justice has reported that the prisoner died on Saturday 28 August, that his next of kin have been informed and that the death was not covid related.

Man Dies In Maghaberry Prison
A 22-year-old man has died while in custody at Maghaberry Prison, the Northern Ireland Prison Service has reported. The Department of Justice has confirmed that the man died in custody on the morning of Thursday, 30 August. The man's next of kin have been informed. The PSNI, Coroner and Prisoner Ombudsman have been informed about the death.

Staff At Maghaberry Prison Watched As Prisoner Self-Harmed
Staff at Maghaberry Prison in Lisburn have been criticised after they failed to intervene while a prisoner blinded himself, according to a Prison Ombudsman report. Sean Lynch, 23, was being detained at the prison in June 2014 and inflicted "extreme and shocking" injuries through self-harm over a three day period.

Prison Arts Celebrated
Northern Ireland prisoners have won two first prizes and landed more than 29 awards in a prestigious UK-wide competition for prison arts. Artwork from Maghaberry and Hydebank Wood was among 150 original visual pieces on display at the annual Koestler Awards Exhibition which previewed at the Royal Festival Hall in London today.
