Thomas Murder Case Continues

It has emerged this week that paramilitaries were not involved in the killing of schoolboy Thomas Devlin. A detective testifying at the trial of two men accused of murdering the 15 year old in north Belfast in August 2005 told Belfast Crown Court no groups were involved in the shock killing. The jury also heard that there was no fingerprint or DNA evidence against either of the two accused. Belfast men Nigel Brown, 26, from Whitewell Road and Gary Taylor, 23, from Mountcollyer Avenue, deny murdering Thomas Devlin.

Glengormley Alleygates Sought

A local politician has called for the erection of gates to close off an alleyway in a residential area of Glengormley. Alderman Nigel Hamilton explained: "The residents of Greenhill and the Carnmoney Road have been plagued by youngsters with verbal abuse, damage to cars and attacks on their homes causing these poor residents to be on a guard watch 24-hours a day. I have given my support to establish an alleygate at the St Mary's Carnmoney Road pathway," he said. "Occasional foot patrolling by PSNI is no substitute for the restricted opening in the evenings. If properly managed this will work and the only stumbling block to achieving this is the Road Service, explained the DUP Alderman, who also said that he will call a public meeting to hear the views of people affected to identify the response of agencies to assist them.

Health Cuts Loom

The South Eastern Health Trust is considering closing beds and cutting the Accident and Emergency night service at a new Downpatrick hospital. Downe Hospital cost £64m and opened last June, but already the Trust has to look at how it can deal with the impact of staff shortages and tight budgets.

Railway 'Great Escape'

Passengers on a train that broke down yesterday on the tracks near Dunloy, Co Antrim, had to clamber off on ladders, such was the incline and position involved. The early morning train from Belfast to Londonderry broke down on Wednesday. Passengers were stranded for two hours until the rescue.
