Bríd Rodgers named as Politician of the Year
The SDLP leader Bríd Rodgers has been award the title of 'Northern Ireland Politician of the Year'.
The political awards, organised by Channel 4 and House Magazine, made the announcement to the SDLP deputy leader and Minister for Agriculture while she was attending a series of political engagements in Washington with her party leader Mark Durkan.
Responding to the award, Mrs Rodgers said she was "delighted" and added she was particularly pleased that she was selected to win the award by her assembly members across the political divide.
Speaking in Washington the deputy SDP leader said: "This award is also recognition of an unprecedented period of co-operation at a time of crisis for an important industry already experiencing real difficulties. It is a tribute to all who played their part in the battle to contain Foot and Mouth despite the difficulties and hardship involved.
"On a personal note, I would like to thank my family for their support and forbearance during a difficult and intense period."
Bríd Rodgers, a founding member of the SDLP, was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in June 1998 for Upper Bann constituency.
She became Minister for Agriculture in 1999 and was voted deputy SDLP leader at the start of December 2001.

First Minister receives 'opposition' award
NI First Minister Ian Paisley has become the first Northern Ireland politician to receive the ‘Opposition Politician of the Year’ award at a ceremony held in London. The First Minster was presented with a solid brass portcullis at Gladstone's Library in Whitehall and said: "I am very proud, it is a great honour and they were more than nice to me.
