Gaeltacht Alert

Lessons for local government staff in Irish is a "misuse of public money", unionists have claimed. The outcry comes after it emerged the Department of Regional Development (DRD) has begun running Irish language classes for staff. Both departments are headed by Sinn Fein ministers, Conor Murphy and Caitriona Ruane respectively. DRD voluntary lunctime classes in the minority language have been described by TUV spokesperson David Vancethe lessons as a "colossal" waste of taxpayers' money. It is believed the Department of Education is planning to begin a similar initiative.

Devlin Evidence 'Weak'

The case against two men accused of the murder of Thomas Devlin - who died as a result of stab wounds in August 2005, while his friend Jonathan McKee was stabbed in the abdomen and hit on the head with a wooden baton - is in its final stages. However, the prosecution's case against one of the men accused of murdering Thomas Devlin is a "jigsaw puzzle cut up with scissors," a defence lawyer has said. Arthur Harvey QC said prosecutors were inviting the jury to accept the theory Nigel Brown, 26, was guilty of murder but ignore evidence to the contrary. Mr Brown, of Whitewell Road, and Gary Taylor, 23, from Mountcollyer Avenue, Belfast, deny murdering the teenager. The jury will hear the closing speech from Mr Taylor's defence on Monday.

Councils on 'Final Warning'

NI's councils have been given a week to accept proposals for new structures. NI Environment Minister Edwin Poots wants a single waste authority and business service as part of an efficiency drive and this week has given councils until 25 February to comply and he has threatened to block plans to reduce the number of councils unless his proposals are agreed. There are currently 26 councils in Northern Ireland but there are plans to reduce this number to 11. Mr Poots was addressing delegates at the Northern Ireland Local Government Association's (NILGA) conference. See: Council Reform Deadline 'Scandalous'

Snow 'No Show'

Met Eireann has said it's unlikely there will be any further snowfall in the coming days. Leitrim and Fermanagh were particularly earlier this week, with reports of up to four inches of snow in some areas. Motorists were also urged to take care on the Ballyshannon to Enniskillen Road this morning and on the A5 main road through Co Tyrone from Londonderry and Letterkenny. John Eagleton from Met Eireann said further snow is not expected but the temperatures will be staying low until the end of the month in what has been one of the coldest winters on record.

Man Missing

Police in Fermanagh are growing concerned for the safety of a missing 81-year-old man. John Joe Maguire was last seen at his home at Drumroosk, Kinawley on Monday morning. Mr Maguire is described as being about 5ft 6inches tall, of a stocky build with thinning, grey hair and when last seen he was wearing a beige jacket, dark trousers and black shoes. Mr Maguire does not drive and is also a regular user of taxis so any taxi driver who has given him a lift over the past few days, is asked to contact police in Enniskillen. The number to call is 0845 600 8000.
