John Hume honoured with Ghandi Peace Prize
Former leader of the SDLP and Nobel Laureate John Hume will be honoured in India with the Ghandi Peace Prize.
The award, to be made on Friday, February 1, was made in recognition of the contribution Mr Hume has made to the peace process and his life-long contribution to the wider community as a founder member of the civil rights movement and the Credit Union. The Indian government has described the current peace process as "an enduring monument to the untiring efforts o Mr Hume. He is a shining example of the triumph of peace and non-violence in today's world".
The Indian government said: "In honouring Mr John Hume, the Indian nation pays tribute to an extraordinary man, who by his fearlessness, selflessness and dedication to the cause of humanity upheld those ideals which were dearest to Mahatma Ghandi."
The Ghandi Peace Prize was launched in 1995 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Mahatma Ghandi's birth. Previous winners include Germany's Gerhard Fischer and Nelson Mandela. Mr Hume will receive the prize at the President's Residence in New Delhi at 12pm (or 6.30am GMT).
After receiving the prize Mr Hume will attend a meeting with the Sri Lankan head of state, prime minister, MPs and business leaders.
The meeting has been arranged by the Initiative for Political and Conflict Transformation (Inpact). (GMcG)

Hume accepts Ghandi peace prize
Nobel Laureate John Hume MEP has received the Mahatma Ghandi Peace Prize in a ceremony in New Delhi, India. According to the citation, the prize was presented to him for his "outstanding work and contribution to social, economic and political transformation through non-violence and other Ghandian methods".

A veteran of many 'peace' rallies in the 1970s - Mairead Corrigan Maguire - one of the original anti-NI Troubles 'Peace People', has addressed a large Belfast crowd to condemn the actions of the Israeli government in Gaza. She was speaking at the weekend when the City Hall demonstration was held against the Israeli attack on the Gaza area.
