Shannon To Stand In Strangford
Kircubbin pork farmer Jim Shannon will fight to retain Iris Robinson's Westminster seat for the DUP at the forthcoming General Election.
Mrs Robinson stood down as MP for the County Down constituency following revelations over her alleged financial dealings.
She ousted Ulster Unionist John Taylor from the seat in 2001. Mrs Robinson was subsequently re-elected in 2005 and enjoyed a 13,000 majority having secured 56% of the vote.
She held office until January this year, before being expelled from the DUP.
Last night party officials selected Democratic Unionist stalwart Mr Shannon to contest the Parliamentary seat.
He has been an Ards Borough councillor for almost 25 years, and an Strangford Assembly member since 1998.
"I will be fighting a positive campaign based on hard work and strong, genuine and well-documented unionist beliefs," Mr Shannon said.
"Whilst some want to take Northern Ireland backwards, I'm happy to be representing a party which wants to build for the future and take Northern Ireland forward."
He added: "In Westminster I'll be an unfettered voice and I'll do what's right for Northern Ireland."
Former UTV journalist Mike Nesbitt has been chosen as the joint Ulster Unionist and Tory candidate to fight for the Strangford seat.
In 2005 the UUP polled at 21%, a figure broadly similar to the 2007 Assembly elections.
