Other NI News In Brief
Wheel Grinds To Halt
SDLP North Belfast Councillor Nichola Mallon has said she was disappointed by news that the Belfast Wheel is to be removed from the grounds of the City Hall in a matter of weeks. "The Big Wheel is a popular attraction in the city centre not just with visitors but also with the people of Belfast. Like many others, I will be disappointed if Belfast looses this attraction completely," she said. It is understood the attraction could be removed in as little as two weeks time, despite a planning application lodged by the operating company - Great City Attractions - seeking to keep the Wheel open until the summer of 2011. The Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association has said that closing the Wheel in a matter of weeks could have an impact on footfall for city centre retailers.
Bloody Sunday In Focus
The official report into Derry's Bloody Sunday killings may not be released until after the general election, the Government has confirmed. NIO Secretary of State Shaun Woodward said Government lawyers will this week begin legal checks of the 5,000-page document for potential national and personal security issues. Lord Saville, who led the public inquiry into how 14 people were killed by British troops in Londonderry in 1972, is however to retain the report if a publication date cannot be secured before an election is called.
Babies At Risk
Over 200 babies are stillborn or die shortly after birth in Northern Ireland and a further 2,000 require urgent neonatal care. Three NI baby charities have carried out a report which claims some infants could be saved if improvements are made to maternity and neonatal services. It also raises concerns about pathology services delaying post mortems. The report, Every Baby Matters, is being presented to the Northern Ireland Assembly today.
Kesh Crash Victim Named
The driver who was killed in a road crash in Co Fermanagh on Saturday has been named. He was 29-year-old William Hughes, a lorry driver from the Trillick area who died when his lorry overturned on the Maynoo Road in Kesh at 11.30am on Saturday. SF Welcome Irish School Cash
Sinn Féin MLA and member of the Assembly's Education committee, Michelle O'Neill has welcomed the decision by NI Education Minister Caitriona Ruane to fund four Irish Language schools with an investment of £2m in the sector. "The decision to invest in schools in Belfast, Crumlin, Castlewellan and Newtownabbey through Iontaobhas na Gaelscolaíochta will ensure that the children at these schools will have proper classrooms in order to learn. The work of the Iontaobhas is firmly securing the Irish Medium Sector well into the future and they are entitled to continued support in securing equality for this sector."
Rebellion Tricolour For Auction
The last full-sized Tricolour from the 1916 Rising still in existence is being put up for auction in New York today. The flag is being auctioned by Bloomsbury Auctions in New York. It is estimated it could fetch up to $500,000. The Tricolour is thought to have flown from the top of the GPO during the rising. The auction house's description says the linen Tricolour is accompanied by a note from Dr George St George, (who owned the flag until 1922) reading 'Captured by British Troops at GPO Dublin, April 1916 and given to Dr George St George by an old War veteran, Sergt Davis'.
