Flanagan to appoint independent adviser on Omagh investigation
PSNI Chief Constable Sir Ronnie Flanagan is set to appoint a senior Merseyside police officer to act as an independent adviser to the PSNI’s Omagh bomb investigation.
Sir Ronnie will make the appointment to “quality assure” the current investigation and it represents the first stage of his official response to the damning report published by the Police Ombudsman Nuala O’Loan last December.
Sir Ronnie has prepared two documents to rebut what he described as the “factual inaccuracies and unwarranted assumptions” he believes are contained in Ms O'Loan's report.
The first of the Chief Constable's publications, at 87 pages, is to be unveiled in Omagh on Thursday, January 24. Sir Ronnie is then expected to follow that up with the announcement of external investigator’s appointment.
The appointment is a compromise over one of the six main recommendations made by the Police Ombudsman, who had called for an independent inquiry team to take over the Omagh investigation.
The second 104-page document will directly answer the recommendations in the Ombudsman’s report. The Policing Board and the Secretary of State John Reid have already received copies of the Chief Constables report.
Sir Ronnie said on Wednesday, January 23, that the PSNI had "nothing to hide about its conduct of the Omagh investigation and is more than ready to take any steps to reassure the public". (GMcG)

Man Dies After Bus Fall In Belfast
Detectives are investigating the death of an 80-year-old man who fell from a bus in Belfast. Police have said that they believe the man was travelling on a 2J Translink Metro bus service at around 11:15am on Friday, 08 November, when he suffered a fall as the bus travelled along Royal Avenue, near it's junction with North Street.

Pedestrian Dies Following Road Traffic Collision Ikn West Belfast
A female pedestrian in her 70s has tragically died following a road traffic collision in west Belfast on Saturday, 9th November. The incident occurred on Hannahstown Hill shortly after 6:50pm when two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle. Emergency services attended the scene, and the injured pedestrians were taken to hospital.

Policing Board locked in talks over Omagh investigation
The Northern Ireland Policing Board remained locked in talks for much of Thursday as they discussed the future direction the Omagh bomb investigation should take. The Board, which is made up of individuals from both sides of the political divide met on Thursday, February 7, in an attempt to hammer out a compromise at Clarendon Dock.

Sir Ronnie Flanagan will vacate the Chief Constable's hot seat in favour of taking up a new post with Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary. As Inspector of Constabulary, Sir Ronnie will now inspect a number of UK police forces including its largest – the Metropolitan Police.
