BIC Systems MD named IT Professional of the Year

The Managing Director and co-founder of B.I.C Systems, Mr Ed Vernon, has been awarded the IT Professional of the Year Award for 2002 by the British Computer Society (Belfast Branch).

Mr Vernon, a former Chairman of the Software Industry Federation (now known as Momentum), chaired the Group, which developed "IT's the Future- A strategy for the Software industry in Northern Ireland".

Mr Vernon described winning the prestigious award - which is made for a contribution of major significance in the advancement of the Information Technology industry within the BCS Northern Ireland region - as a “real honour.” He said: “This doesn’t just reflect on me – it also reflects on my colleagues in BIC Systems. Given the challenges of the past year, the ICT sector and government now need to work more closely together than at any other time.”

Commenting on the award, Chairman of BCS (Belfast Branch), Ian Stuart said: "Ed Vernon has shown great commitment, tenacity and enthusiasm in promoting Northern Ireland's IT industry. The Belfast Branch feels he is a worthy winner and a person we will definitely hear much from in the future." (KMcA)

Man Escapes Injury After 'Suspected' Gun Jams In North Belfast
A man has escaped injury after a suspected gun jammed during an attempted shooting attack in north Belfast. The incident occurred at Mount Vernon Lane at around 10.20pm on Wednesday. Two masked men forced the victim to the ground and produced a gun. When the attacker attempted to fire the weapon it is believed to have jammed.

Second man remanded over loyalist shooting
A second man has today been charged with the attempted murder of leading loyalist Mark Haddock last Tuesday. Ronald Trevor Bowe, 29, and from Mount Vernon Gardens has also been reported to the Public Prosecution Service for alleged membership of the UVF. Mr Bowe replied "not guilty" when the charge was put to him today at Belfast Magistrates Court.

Minister announces aid package for beef industry
Agriculture Minister Jeff Rooker has announced new measures worth around £1.3 million to assist Northern Ireland's beef industry. The Minister explained that the package of measures announced for England in October will be replicated in Northern Ireland to help address the particular challenges facing the beef sector at present.
