Flood Alert

Reg Empey, Conservatives and Unionists candidate for South Antrim - and party leader - has said that Antrim's Meadowside residents need long-term solutions to the flooding threat hanging over them since August 2008. "A total of 33 properties were affected by flooding two years ago, and it was a source of deep frustration that some residents were not able to return to their homes for as long a year. Now I hear of residents who, on a rainy day, stand on the banks of the river fearfully anticipating a further flood. That is no way to live," he said. "I would call on the Rivers Agency to implement measures which will, in the long-term, prevent a reoccurrence of the 2008 flooding. It is clear that a thorough examination of the area is necessary if its vulnerability is to be addressed. The adequacy of the flood embankment must be investigated, and remedial work carried out. It is also essential that the previous fails of the back drainage system are investigated, and the current surface water pumping station looked at in terms of its capability," he said. The borough has one of the worst flood records in the Province, with the Sixmilewater River bursting its banks at various locations on several occasions.
