Innovative jobs initiative launched for Belfast
A Department of Employment and Learning pilot project has been launched which hopes to place at least 290 unemployed people in work in deprived areas of Belfast.
The pilot programme, Belfast Gasworks Employment Matching Services (GEMS) aims to provide a network of job support services targeted specifically at unemployed people from designated communities of social need. Focusing on South and East Belfast, the project will create greater access to jobs arising in the Gasworks site and Laganside area.
Officially launching GEMS on Tuesday January 15, Carmel Hanna, the Minister for Employment and Learning (DEL), said the programme “offered new hope to unemployed people on their own doorsteps.”
The minister added: “It is a practical application designed to meet the needs of the local community. It is an excellent example of partnership in action benefiting local communities and particularly people seeking work.”
Among the programme’s objectives, GEMS hopes to recruit 600 unemployed people to the project, place at least 290 unemployed people in work and help 155 unemployed people back into mainstream education to improve their long-term job prospects.
Mrs Hanna said: “Belfast GEMS reflects the importance that the communities of South and East Belfast put on securing jobs for unemployed people in their areas. I would encourage people to take full advantage of the opportunities being made available through the Belfast GEMS initiative.”
Alongside the DEL, other sponsors of the programme include Belfast City Council, Laganside Corporation, Belfast Regeneration Office, Belfast European Partnership Board, Great East Belfast Partnership Board and the South Belfast Partnership Board. (AMcE)

Belfast GEMS to create community jobs
A major new jobs initiative has been launched which is set to benefit unemployed people in South and East Belfast. Belfast GEMS is a local employment initiative which will focus on providing access to jobs with businesses situated within the Gasworks and Laganside sites.

Heavy Snow Closes Over 80 Schools
Over 80 schools across Northern Ireland have been closed as the heavy snow continues to cause disruption on Tuesday morning. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, as the snow is continuing to affect many roads. Areas which have been majorly disrupted include Lisburn, Castlereagh and Carryduff.
