West Belfast Alert Ends
A suspicious object which led to an overnight security alert has been declared a hoax device after Army bomb disposal officers were called to examine it on the Donegall Road close to the Park Centre in the west of the city. The area near the off-slip to the M1 motorway was closed to traffic at about 2am on Wednesday. It has since been re-opened.
Pensioner Stabbed
An elderly man has been stabbed during an attempted car theft in the Malone area of south Belfast. It happened shortly before 11.50pm on Monday at Bladon Drive, off the Malone Road but news only emerged last night of how the victim - who is in his 70s - was stepping into his car in his own driveway when he was approached by two men. One of the men tried to take the car keys from the pensioner and during a struggle, he sustained a stab wound to the side.
Ritchie Names Policy Team
The newly elected MP and SDLP leader, Margaret Ritchie has announced new party appointments to carry out policy work. The South Down representative also revealed that a number of MLAs will take on new responsibilities in a reshuffle of portfolios. "Under my leadership I believe the SDLP has a political vision that allows us to differentiate ourselves very clearly from other parties on the issues that matter most," she said, noting that Mark Durkan will work on the Irish Unity aspect, Conall McDevitt will lead on a Shared Society and Alasdair McDonnell will continue to work on the Economy," she said.
Use-By Date Fine
A food retailer has been fined £300 for selling food past its use by date in its Belfast store. Santaka Limited was also ordered to pay costs of £66 at Belfast Magistrates Court after the prosecution was brought by Belfast City Council following a routine inspection at the Litpol store on the Ormeau Road on February 17, last year. A revisit was carried out on March 4, 2009. On both occasions the defendant was found to be selling out of date stock, contrary to Food Labelling Regulations (NI) 1996.

There's renewed confidence in the housing market apparent in Northern Ireland this week with the launch of a new estate agent - with backing by Belfast's Lord Mayor and local MP. 'Dig Into' Archaeology
The public are being invited to get 'hands on' with history through a series of events organised by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA). It is encouraging the public to visit some of Northern Ireland's most striking historical sites and monuments to take part in 'Archaeology Days' events throughout June, including excavations, tours and displays. This year's programme includes an excavation following the exciting rediscovery last year, at Dunluce Castle, of the lost 17th Century village site and 'A Midsummer's Night Drum' at the Giant's Ring. Straying Dog Owner Pays-Up
A woman has been fined £70 for allowing her dog to stray. Margaret Hayes, from Finch Grove in south Belfast, was also ordered to pay costs of £66 at Belfast Magistrates Court after her Staffordshire bull terrier was found straying at a children's playground in the Taughmonagh estate in January. The prosecution was brought by Belfast City Council.

NI Employment and Learning Minister, Sir Reg Empey, has welcomed a series of reports which show how his Department's programmes are meeting quality and performance standards. The work includes a report from the Department's Quality Improvement Adviser which responds to the outcomes of inspections conducted by the Education and Training Inspectorate which finds much to commend the performance of Departmental programmes, including enrolments on skills programmes have increased significantly over the last decade and skills provision has been successful at engaging with those from more deprived areas. Northern Ireland performance on this measure tends to be significantly ahead of other parts of the UK.

OFT bans Northern Ireland estate agent
The OFT has made a prohibition order against a Northern Ireland estate agent banning him from estate agency work. Sidney Mawhinney was a sole trader who operated under his own name in Carryduff, County Down. At Downpatrick Crown Court on 18 November 2005, he pleaded guilty to eleven counts of theft and thirteen counts of false accounting.
