Fire damages newly opened city centre nightclub
One of Belfast's newest nightclubs has been severely damaged in an overnight fire.
The fire at the recently opened La Lea nightclub, located in Franklin Street, was reported at 1:30am and fire fighters battled for almost three hours to bring the blaze under control.
The fire, which started on the second floor of the multi-level complex, quickly spread to the third and fourth floor. The complex layout of the venue led to problems for the fire crew tackling the blaze: "Initially, fire fighting was hampered by the complexity of the building and the extensive smoke on the three floors," said Northern Ireland Fire Brigade District Commander, Jeff Bannerman. "Considering the difficult conditions the fire brigade were faced with, crews quickly brought the fire under control."
La Lea, which is located in the building which previously housed ill-fated super-club Franklin Gate, looked set to become one of the city's most glamorous venues alongside the likes of Milk, Tatu and the Apartment, with its sophisticated and chic interior design.

ASSEMBLY CREATE AWARD TO HONOUR FIRE SERVICE
THE Northern Ireland Fire Service is to receive the first ever award given by the province's devolved assembly. An illuminated scroll is to be presented to Chief Fire Officer John McClelland on Tuesday, by assembly speaker Lord Alderdice in tribute to the sacrifice made by fire fighters over the years.
