Obel Crane To Be Dismantled
A towering crane that has been a part of the Belfast skyline for almost two years at the side of the Lagan at the Obel Tower site is to be dismantled.
The crane was raised at the end of July 2008 and came into operation on 1 August as construction on the superstructure began.
The tallest crane in Ireland, it stands at over 106 metres high (plus 6m below basement) - that is the same size as Samson, the taller of the adjacent Harland & Wolff shipyard cranes that are just across the Lagan river.
The crane will be dismantled using a 350 tonne mobile crane over the weekend of 12th and 13th June. It will take 16 flatbed trucks to transport the crane to the head office of main contractor O'Hare and McGovern at Newry.
O'Hare & McGovern had to prefabricate a 6m high metal structure which is concreted into the basement of the building to support the crane. This metal structure will be burnt out and removed once the crane has been dismantled.
