Newry goes online to promote bid for city status

One of the final pieces in the jigsaw of Newry’s bid to become the next city in Northern Ireland was recently put in place with the launch of a new website to support Newry’s bid for city status.

The website at www.newrycity.com includes promotional material supporting Newry’s bid for city status and contains extensive photographic coverage of the city bid presentations that were made in Newry, Belfast, Dublin and London.

The city bid is a result of collaboration between Newry & Mourne District Council, Newry Town Centre Management Partnership and Newry Chamber of Commerce & Trade.

Chamber President, Mr Gerard O’Hare welcomed the website because it not only gave the opportunity to portray the city status bid but also gave a window to illustrate Newry’s continuing economic revival. He said: “Newry is now a regional hub for trade and business and it is attracting a lot more investors than ever before. Hopefully, potential investors and many others will visit this website and see our enterprising community for themselves.”

Newry & Mourne District Councillor Frank Feely expressed his gratitude not only to the website’s sponsor First Derivatives, but to all of the members of the public and private sector who have put so much time and effort into Newry’s bid for city status.

Councillor Feely said: “This website is another indication of the breadth of support for city status from the private sector and we are grateful to First Derivatives for their efforts. In terms of future projects, this illustrates that the partnership approach with the private sector adopted at the initial stages of the city bid application is the way forward and is the one which will bear most fruit.”

Brian Conlon, the Managing Director of website sponsor First Derivatives said he was delighted to have been able to repay in a small way the support that the company had received from the local community, and wished the organisers of Newry’s city bid every success. (SP)
