Tragedy Ends Donegal Rally

A rally co-driver has died in an accident at the Donegal International Rally.

He was named last night as Thomas Maguire, from County Meath.

The accident happened just after 3pm on Saturday when his vehicle went off the road south of Portsalon in the north of the county. Mr Maguire (26), from Longwood, died when the Citroen CR2 Max (similar to this vehicle at the World Rally Championships) he was navigating ploughed through a hedge before plunging off a cliff during a fast section on stage 11 of the Topaz Donegal International Rally on Saturday.

The driver of the vehicle was critically injured and is being treated in hospital. The rest of the event has been cancelled and a memorial service will be held on Sunday morning.

Clerk of the course, Danny Gormley, said that organisers' thoughts and prayers were with the Maguire family.

The annual rally is in its 38th year and was expected to attract an estimated 70,000 spectators to County Donegal.

It is the first time a competitor has been killed in the rally. In 2008, a spectator was killed and in 2002 two stewards were killed.
