New wastewater treatment works planned for Mayobridge
Regional Development Minister, Peter Robinson has announced that work on updating the current water treatment works in Mayobridge, County Down is scheduled to begin in August 2003.
The Minister outlined his Department’s plans for infrastructure improvements in the village following a meeting with local SDLP representatives at the weekend.
Mr Robinson said: “The wastewater treatment works in Mayobridge is, like many in the Province, under pressure to cope with rapidly increasing rates of housing development.
“Mayobridge is developing rapidly and the construction of a new wastewater treatment works, at a cost of £380,000, underlines my Department’s commitment to meeting European standards for treated effluent.”
Mr Robinson explained that deterioration of the local sewerage network, which resulted in high levels of groundwater infiltration during and after periods of heavy rainfall, had added to the load on the existing Works.
He said: “Water Service is presently taking action to correct the problem. The replacement of over 300 metres of sewer, early in the New Year, at a cost of £22,000 will further improve the local sewerage infrastructure.”
