Prisioner Sentenced For Soldier Murder
A former Irish republican paramilitary has been jailed for life for the murder of an Army recruitment officer nearly 20 years ago.
Declan Duffy, 36, pleaded guilty to the murder of Sergeant Michael Newman in Derby in 1992, at Stafford Crown Court.
Sgt Newman, 33, was shot dead in Derby on April 14 1992 after leaving the Army recruitment office in the city's main centre.
Duffy, who is already serving a four-year sentence in the Irish Republic for his INLA membership, was jailed for life with a minimum term of 24 years. However, he could serve as little as two years for the murder under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.
Duffy's fellow INLA member Joseph Magee pleaded guilty to the murder and was jailed in 2004.
Anthony Gorman, who is also accused of the shooting, is fighting extradition from the Irish Republic.
