Dublin Docks Raid Recovers Cigarette Haul
Some €4 million worth of illegally imported cigarettes were seized at Dublin Port last night.
Customs officers said they uncovered the huge stash of nine million cigarettes in a container disguised as containing disposable cups.
The seizure was part of an operation targeting the supply and sale of illegal tobacco. A Customs spokeswoman said the haul has a potential retail value of €3.8 million.
If sold on the black market, it would have amounted to a potential loss of €3 million to the public purse in taxes after the container arrived on a ship from China delivering cargo to Ireland.
Customs officers using so-called profiling techniques decided to search the contents of the container when the ship docked this morning.
The illegally-imported cigarettes were branded Benson and Hedges, according to a Customs spokeswoman. However, no one has been arrested.
Meanwhile in Dublin, a stash of heroin worth an estimated €475,000 has been seized.
The quantity of drugs was found during a planned search of an apartment in the Smithfield area on Tuesday afternoon. A man and a woman, aged in their 20s, were arrested at scene.
Both are being held under the provisions of Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996 at Kevin Street and Harcourt Terrace garda stations.
The search was part of an ongoing operation targeting organised crime in the south inner city.
