Multi-million pound Nortel deal secured with help of Monkstown plant
Nortel Networks’ Newtownabbey plant has helped the company secure a $78 million deal with China Unicom, the second largest mobile phone operator in China.
The deal was secured after Nortel developed a long-haul optical network which will service 12 provinces from the north to the south of China, an area 20 times the size of Northern Ireland. The network was initially built and simulated at the company’s Monstown site.
Robert Mao, chief executive officer, Nortel Networks China, said: “China Mobile’s network expansions and IN (Intelligent Network) services deployment are strategic moves to enhance profitability and competitive advantage, and significantly strengthen Nortel Networks leadership position in China’s wireless networking market.”
The deal was announced during the tail end of a trade mission to China by a delegation from Northern Ireland, led by Economy Minister Sir Reg Empey. (MB)
