Cross border operation cracks down on fuel smugglers

Ten people have been arrested in a major crackdown on a multi-million pound fuel smuggling and money laundering operation by police and customs agencies on both sides of the Irish border.

Police and Garda searched more than 30 premises in south Armagh, Co Tyrone, and north Co Louth and significant amounts of fuel and cash were confiscated during the co-ordinated swoop on Wednesday, December 5.

The Republic’s Criminal Assets Bureau and the Organised Crime Task Force based in Northern Ireland were involved in the operation.

Jane Kennedy, Security Minister and Chair of the Organised Crime Task Force (OCTF) said on Wednesday December 5: “The Government attaches high priority to tackling excise fraud and any related organised crime which robs the UK Exchequer of funds for public services and undermines honest businessmen and women. As Chair of the OCTF, I welcome all joint working which has impact on serious fraud and organised crime in Northern Ireland.”

The Minister said the operation was exactly the type of multi-agency action which the Task Force wished to see. (AMcE)
