Carrickfergus station reopens following refurbishment

Translink has reopened its Carrickfergus station following an extensive refurbishment programme.

The renovation work, which represents an £850,000 investment, received the official seal of approval from Minister for Regional Development Peter Robinson, who carried out the unveiling ceremony.

The refurbishment programme has not only restored Carrick’s original 19th century architecture but incorporated the latest 21st century facilities such as electronic passenger monitors, a Park & Ride facility, and access for passengers with disabilities.

The investment will ensure a more efficient and comfortable facility for Carrick’s travelling public and is in line with the commitment laid down in the new Charter to improve services across the public transport network.

Coinciding with the reopening, Translink launched its revised Passengers Charter which targets improvements in reliability, punctuality, value, safety and comfort within Translink’s overall service.

Dr Joan Smyth, the Chairman of Translink, said: “Translink is wholly committed to providing an excellent service and our new Charter embodies this commitment, showing that we take very seriously the needs and concerns of our customers. After examining equivalent documents from bus and rail operators throughout GB and Ireland we know that the performance standards set by Translink are second to none.

“The pledges laid down in the Charter go hand in hand with investments such as the refurbishment of Carrick station because they both highlight Translink’s dedication to providing improved facilities for the public, and ensuring a value for money, quality service.”

Ted Hesketh, Translink’s Managing Director, added: “Since it first opened in 1848, Carrick station has played a vital role in the development and growth of this community and I am delighted to be present at this key stage in its history.

“Launching the revised Charter is also very appropriate because it indicates the level of service Translink can offer passengers in the future while providing a glimpse into the past.”

Copies of Translink’s Passengers Charter are available in large print, Braille and on audio tape and can be obtained from all main bus and rail stations or the Charter can also be accessed at www.translink.co.uk. (MB)
