Construction award places focus on apprentices

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has issued a call to companies for nominations for the best project involving apprentices for the 2002 Master Builder of the Year Awards.

One of the five categories in the forthcoming Master Builder of the Year competition is the best building project with a significant contribution from an apprentice.

Ian Davis, FMB Director General, explained: “This category rewards those companies which encourage apprentices to enter the industry and offers them excellent training. The award is given to the company, and the judges will be looking for high standards of craftsmanship in a project where an apprentice, or group of apprentices, has had major involvement.”

Peter Lobban, CEO of the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), who are sponsoring the apprentice category, added: “Our estimates show that the building industry needs 370,000 new entrants over the next five years. One of CITB’s key initiatives is to improve recruitment into the construction industry, and as part of this we are delighted to be supporting this award.

The Master Builder of the Year Awards operate on a regional and a national basis. Eleven regional awards will be made, with the winners going forward to the national awards, to be presented in July 2002.

The closing date for entries is 31 March 2002 and further information can be obtained by calling free on 0800 096 5765. (CL)
