Nationwide reports brief UK housing recovery
The Nationwide building society has reported a brief recovery of the UK housing market after it faltered slightly in October.
In its latest monthly survey the Nationwide revealed that UK house prices rose by 0.7 per cent on average during November, while the average price of a house, at £92,262, was 12.8 per cent higher than one year earlier. However, the building society said it believed that a slowdown was still on the cards for next year.
Leading analysts have also predicted that house price growth will slow next year as rising unemployment and weakening economic conditions hit consumer confidence.
However, it is also expected to speed up again late next year in line with an anticipated economic upturn fuelled by low interest rates and an increase in government spending.
While a series of interest rate cuts this year have been designed to stave off the global economic slowdown, the Bank of England's rate-setting monetary policy committee has slashed interest rates thus reducing monthly payments on a £60,000 mortgage by around £100. (MB)
